Some concerts announce themselves as events before a single note is played. First Meeting — the name itself a declaration — brings together Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Chris Potter, Larry Grenadier, and Eric Harland for what may be their first shared stage. That four musicians of this caliber have not yet performed together as a unit only sharpens the anticipation.
Rubalcaba is simply one of the finest jazz pianists alive. The Cuban-born multi-Grammy laureate commands a technique of staggering precision alongside an emotional depth that transcends technique altogether. His phrasing carries the long tradition of Afro-Cuban harmony while reaching toward the most searching corners of modern jazz.
Chris Potter needs no qualifier before his name at this point. His tenor and soprano saxophone work has defined what serious jazz improvisation sounds like for the better part of three decades — melodic without sentiment, complex without opacity. He is, in the best sense, relentless.
Larry Grenadier has been the anchor in some of the most celebrated small groups of his era — extended partnerships with Brad Mehldau and Pat Metheny among them — and his upright bass playing carries that rare quality of making every ensemble feel both grounded and limitless. He listens with the whole instrument.
Eric Harland rounds out a rhythm section that will require its own critical vocabulary. His work with Terence Blanchard and a generation of forward-looking bandleaders has established him as a drummer whose time-feel is simultaneously exact and elastic — the kind of playing that gives soloists permission to take real risks.
The Saratoga Jazz Festival has built its reputation on precisely these moments: configurations that exist once, under summer skies, and then only in memory. A first meeting between four musicians of this stature is, by definition, unrepeatable.
