Moldova is not typically where you look for the next great metal band — but Infected Rain have spent the better part of a decade making the case that geography has nothing to do with it. The Chisinau-based groove metal band, fronted by the extraordinary Lena Scissorhands, has built a genuinely international following through relentless touring, a series of increasingly ambitious records, and live performances that rank among the most intense in contemporary heavy music. Rochester gets them at Montage Music Hall in May.
Scissorhands is the focal point, and justifiably so — a vocalist with both the technical range to move from melodic hooks to guttural extremity and the stage presence to hold a room through all of it. But Infected Rain is not a one-person show. The band’s rhythm section is locked and punishing, the guitar work textured and heavy, and their ability to shift between atmosphere and full-throttle aggression in a single song sets them apart from the crowded field of female-fronted metal acts.
Their recent output has only sharpened the songwriting. The 2022 album Ecdysis received strong notices from the heavy music press, and their 2026 material has continued in that direction — songs that favor dynamics over simple volume, with hooks buried inside the heaviness. The live show, by all accounts, converts skeptics.
For Rochester metal fans who value actual craft over genre positioning, Infected Rain is not a band to skip. Montage Music Hall is the right intimate room for a performance this physically committed. Tickets are available through Etix.
