The night after Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival clears the stage, Bethel Woods does something that feels almost inevitable — it turns the Grateful Dead songbook over to a symphony orchestra. The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration arrives on August 30, 2026, at 8:00 PM, and if there is a more fitting place on Earth to hear these songs given the orchestral treatment, no one has found it yet. This is the Woodstock site. The ghosts are friendly here.
About the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration
This is not a tribute band plugging in and running through the hits. The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration reimagines the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band catalogs through symphonic arrangements — full orchestral sections expanding songs that were already elastic and exploratory in their original form. The ensemble performing these arrangements carries serious lineage.
Melvin Seals spent over a decade as keyboardist in the Jerry Garcia Band and understands the feel of this music at a molecular level. Tom Hamilton, known for his work with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Brothers Past, brings improvisational firepower and a deep command of the Dead’s harmonic language. Grahame Lesh — son of the late Phil Lesh — carries his father’s musical DNA and has become a formidable performer in his own right. John Morgan Kimock, Jacklyn LaBranch, and Kanika Moore round out a group that approaches this material with reverence and real creative ambition. When these players lock in with a full orchestra, the music opens up in ways that Jerry himself was always reaching toward — bigger, more textured, more alive.
Venue Info
Bethel Woods Center for the Arts sits on the grounds where the original 1969 Woodstock festival took place. The amphitheater holds roughly 16,000 across the pavilion and lawn, and the setting — rolling Sullivan County hills, open sky, the museum just steps away — adds a dimension that no other venue can offer for music rooted in this tradition. For an 8:00 PM start on an August evening, the lawn at sunset is going to be something special. The Outlaw Music Festival the day before means the area will already be buzzing — consider making a weekend of it.
