Marty Stuart has been in American roots music long enough that his biography reads like a kind of living history. He played with Lester Flatt as a teenager. He was in Johnny Cash’s band for a decade. He has been making his own music since the 1970s and in the process has built one of the most consistently excellent catalogs in country music — not the Nashville of algorithmic chart strategy, but the real thing: hard country, rockabilly, gospel, and a deep reverence for the tradition that shaped him.
His band, the Fabulous Superlatives, is one of the best working groups in any genre. Guitarist Kenny Vaughan is a player’s player, the kind of musician whose reputation among other musicians runs well ahead of his general fame. Together with Stuart’s mandolin and guitar work and the rhythm section behind them, the Superlatives play with a tightness and energy that makes their live performances something worth going a distance for.
Stuart has always understood that honoring tradition and making vital music are not in conflict. His shows tend to cover ground from across his career — the early country hits, the more exploratory later work, and always the thread of influence that runs from Hank Williams and Flatt & Scruggs through everything he does. He puts on a real show, the kind that moves and swings and occasionally stops you cold.
