Gabriel-Era Genesis, Performed the Way It Was Meant to Be Heard

There’s a reason Peter Gabriel-era Genesis inspires such devotion — and such demanding tribute acts. This is music that was never simple to begin with. The time signature changes in “The Cinema Show,” the layered mellotron textures on Foxtrot, the sheer theatrical ambition of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway — reproducing any of it live requires musicians who understand not just the notes, but the architecture behind them.

RAEL is a six-piece ensemble that has been doing exactly that since 2014, and they’re bringing the full catalog treatment to Cohoes Music Hall on March 20.

The Music

RAEL draws from the deep well of Genesis’s most compositionally rich period: Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and A Trick of the Tail. They also pull from Peter Gabriel’s solo catalog, which means you might hear “Solsbury Hill” alongside “Supper’s Ready” — a 23-minute suite that most bands wouldn’t dare attempt.

What sets RAEL apart from a typical tribute is their commitment to the album versions. These aren’t truncated greatest-hits arrangements. The band plays the songs as they were recorded, which means the extended instrumental passages, the dynamic shifts from whisper-quiet to full-band crescendo, the interplay between guitar, keys, and flute that defined Gabriel-era Genesis. Six musicians gives them the ensemble depth to pull it off without resorting to backing tracks — every part is played live, in real time.

Why Cohoes Music Hall Is the Right Room

Progressive rock lives and dies by its details. The quiet passages matter as much as the loud ones. The space between notes carries as much weight as the notes themselves. You need a room where the audience is actually listening — not talking over the quiet parts, not checking their phones during an eight-minute instrumental build.

Cohoes Music Hall is that room. Five hundred seats, historic acoustics, and an audience that tends to show up because they genuinely care about the music. The hall’s warm, natural sound is ideal for material this dynamic. You’ll hear the bass pedals on “Watcher of the Skies” the way they were meant to be felt. You’ll catch the subtle 12-string guitar work that gets buried in larger venues. This is prog rock in its natural habitat — a proper listening room with real acoustics and an engaged audience.
