There is a particular category of concert billing that requires no persuasion, only announcement. Carlos Santana and The Doobie Brothers will share the stage at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, July 1 at 7:00 PM. Two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame acts. One amphitheater in a state park. A summer evening in Saratoga. The argument for attendance has already been made.

About Santana and The Doobie Brothers

Carlos Santana’s place in rock history was secured before most of today’s concertgoers were born. His performance at Woodstock in 1969 — at twenty-two years old, playing “Soul Sacrifice” to half a million people — remains one of the defining moments in the history of live music. Abraxas followed in 1970 and never left the conversation. Then, three decades later, Supernatural won eight Grammys and produced “Smooth” with Rob Thomas, proving that Santana’s guitar tone is as timeless as any sound in popular music. His playing is immediately recognizable: fluid, spiritual, possessed of a sustain that seems to bend the air in the room.

The Doobie Brothers bring their own considerable history to this stage. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, their catalog runs from the loose, guitar-driven rock of “China Grove” and “Long Train Runnin'” through the sophisticated blue-eyed soul of the Michael McDonald era — “What a Fool Believes,” “Minute by Minute.” They are a band with two distinct identities, both of which produced songs that remain in heavy rotation a half-century later. Live, they deliver with a tightness that belies how long they’ve been at this.

Paired together, this bill represents an evening of guitar-driven American music at its highest level. The styles complement rather than compete — Santana’s Latin-inflected psychedelia flowing into the Doobies’ California rock with a naturalness that makes the pairing feel obvious in retrospect.

Venue Info

SPAC is the venue this show was built for. The amphitheater in Saratoga Spa State Park has been the summer soundtrack for upstate New York since 1966, and there is no better setting for a warm-weather evening of classic rock. The pavilion seats are excellent; the lawn is iconic. Arrive early, claim your spot, and let the pines do the rest. Parking is a walk, but you already knew that.
