If you know Albany’s funk scene, you know Sophistafunk. They’ve been one of the tightest live acts coming out of the Capital Region for years — the kind of band that makes you forget you had an early morning the next day. On Friday, May 29, they’re bringing a stacked “Friends” edition to Putnam Place in Saratoga Springs, featuring Tim Palmieri of Lotus and Kung Fu on guitar. This is not a night to have other plans.

Sophistafunk is Albany’s own — a funk and hip-hop collective built on serious jazz chops and a compositional sensibility that goes deeper than most groove acts twice their size. Their live shows are the point: layered, high-energy, and the kind of thing that rewards showing up early and staying late.
The “Friends” format means the set list opens up, the stage gets more crowded, and anything can happen. Palmieri brings exactly the kind of guitar vocabulary this music calls for — he’s spent years shaping the sound of Lotus and Kung Fu, two of the most respected instrumental acts in the jam and funk world. His presence here isn’t a gimmick; it’s a genuine collaboration between players who know how to listen to each other. The E-Block opens.
