The Bad Plus has been one of the more interesting jazz piano trios of the last 25 years — a group that came up through the Minneapolis scene in the late 1990s and built a reputation for playing jazz with rock-influenced dynamics and a willingness to cover songs from Nirvana, Aphex Twin, and Black Sabbath with complete seriousness. The current lineup has evolved from the original founding trio, but the band’s identity — rigorous musicianship applied to material that doesn’t fit neatly into the jazz canon — has remained consistent.
About the Performance
The Bad Plus live is technically impressive and emotionally engaging in a way that purely academic jazz often isn’t. The dynamic range is enormous — from nearly inaudible passages to passages that hit with the force of a rock band — and the interplay between musicians reflects years of working in close ensemble. For Albany jazz fans, this is a significant booking at a room sized right for it. The Egg’s acoustics reward the kind of listening The Bad Plus demands.
