The New Pornographers at Water Street Music Hall in Rochester on April 25 represent something increasingly rare in contemporary music: a supergroup whose collective output has been consistently stronger than any member’s solo work, and that includes Neko Case and Dan Bejar, both of whom have built formidable careers on their own. A.C. Newman’s power-pop songwriting, Case’s voice, and the band’s ability to make intricate arrangements sound effortless have made them one of indie rock’s most enduring acts since their 2000 debut.
Water Street in the Finger Lakes is a venue that suits a band at this stage — established enough to fill the room, intimate enough that the vocal harmonies and instrumental detail land the way they were intended. Twenty-five years into their career, the New Pornographers remain one of the best live bands in indie rock.
