Josh “The Reverend” Peyton runs a stripped-down operation: guitar, drums, and washtub bass, with Peyton himself handling the six-string and his wife Breezy handling percussion duty. What the trio produces in terms of sound defies the configuration entirely — big, warm, ferocious country-blues that sounds like it was built in a barn and perfected on the road, which is more or less the truth. Peyton grew up in rural Indiana surrounded by the tradition he has spent his adult life honoring and extending. His guitar style draws primarily from the Delta blues — open tunings, finger-picking patterns that mimic bass lines and melody simultaneously, the rhythmic intelligence of a player who has absorbed decades of recordings before a single lesson.
