Tomahawk with Melvins at Electric City. I had to read it twice too. Two of the most uncompromising, experimental heavy acts in music history on the same bill, in a 300-person room in Schenectady. This is the kind of show that doesn’t happen — except it is happening, and you need to be there. July 31st. Mark it.

About Tomahawk & Melvins

Tomahawk is the supergroup project featuring Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, and the music is exactly as weird, heavy, and brilliant as that pedigree suggests. Their sound is impossible to pin down — equal parts heavy rock, experimental noise, and avant-garde composition, delivered with a precision that borders on surgical. With Melvins on the bill — a band that literally helped invent sludge metal and has been one of the most consistently innovative heavy bands for over four decades — this double bill is a masterclass in musical fearlessness. These two acts together represent the absolute outer edge of what rock music can be. The Melvins alone would be worth the price of admission — Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover have been redefining heavy music for over forty years, and their live show remains one of the most punishing and mesmerizing experiences in rock music. Add Tomahawk’s Mike Patton-fronted chaos to the bill and you’ve got a night that’s going to test the structural integrity of Electric City’s walls.

The Venue

Electric City in Schenectady is 300 capacity, which means you’re going to be standing in the same room as Mike Patton and Buzz Osborne in a space barely bigger than a large living room. The intimacy is going to be insane. The sound system handles heavy and experimental music with clarity, and the compact size means every bizarre time signature change, every vocal acrobatic, every bass-heavy assault hits you with full force.

This might be the most insane double bill of the entire summer in Upstate New York. Tomahawk and Melvins in a 300-cap room is something you couldn’t have dreamed up. These tickets are going to evaporate, and every person in that room is going to witness something they’ll talk about forever. I cannot overstate this — if you care about music that pushes boundaries, this is the show of the year. Go. This is the show of the summer, and it hasn’t even happened yet. Tomahawk and Melvins in a room this small is the kind of thing that gets whispered about in music circles for years. Do not miss this. Whatever it takes, be in that room.
