Twitching Tongues does not make music for casual listeners, and they do not tour for people who need to recognize a song before they care. What the Los Angeles band has built over the past decade is a body of work rooted in hardcore that pulls heavily from doom, heavy metal, and a kind of emotional darkness that is more honest than theatrical. When they play Empire Live in Albany on June 27, the Capital Region‘s underground community gets one of the more uncompromising live shows on the current circuit.

The band emerged from the LA hardcore scene with a sound that never quite fit the established templates — too heavy and bleak for youth crew, too rooted in hardcore for the doom metal crowd, and too serious about both to crossover into something more digestible. Records like Sleep Therapy and Gaining Purpose Through Passionate Hatred built a devoted audience precisely because the music did not try to meet anyone halfway. You either understand what they are doing or you find out at a show like this one.
Empire Live is the right size for Twitching Tongues — close enough to the stage that the weight of the music actually lands on you, in a room that has historically been supportive of underground and extreme music acts. June 27 is a Saturday, and for the people this show is for, that means a night worth planning around.
If you are in the Albany hardcore and heavy music community, this one is already on your radar. If you are not — but you like music that does not perform emotions, it just has them — show up anyway.
