Troy Savings Bank Music Hall’s Music @ Noon series brings world-class musicians into one of the finest concert halls in the country — and opens the doors for free. The April installment features Veena and Devesh Chandra — mother and son, sitar and tabla — in an afternoon of North Indian classical music.
About Veena & Devesh Chandra
Veena Chandra is an internationally recognized sitarist, composer, and choreographer who has spent decades building a bridge between North Indian classical music and western listeners. She has been on faculty at Skidmore College since 1990 and holds a position as Artist Associate in Sitar at Williams College. She’s also the founder of the Dance and Music School of India in Latham, NY — which means she’s as much a part of the Capital Region’s cultural fabric as she is an international touring artist.
Her son Devesh Chandra has been playing tabla since age three and has built a career spanning classical Indian music and cross-genre collaboration — working with Western folk, flamenco, jazz, Latin, and Japanese Taiko ensembles. The combination of the two creates something that rewards listeners who know the tradition and welcomes those encountering it for the first time.
Venue Info
Troy Savings Bank Music Hall’s acoustics, renowned since 1875, do extraordinary things with acoustic instruments. The sitar’s complex resonance and the tabla’s precise articulation were made for a room like this.
