Wilco’s biennial festival at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts is unlike anything else on the Northeast calendar. It isn’t a corporate festival with a rotating cast of algorithmic bookings. It’s a curated event built by one of alternative rock’s most thoughtful bands, in a venue that happens to be one of the country’s great contemporary art museums. That combination — curation, setting, community — is why Solid Sound sells out every time, and why the people who’ve been once come back without hesitation.
The MASS MoCA campus spans 26 acres of converted mill buildings along the Hoosic River. The festival uses multiple stages and outdoor spaces woven between active gallery installations. You can catch a set, wander into a gallery, eat, and find another stage — all without leaving the grounds. It is, by design, a total experience rather than a simple concert.
