About This Festival

There is a building on the campus of Bard College that looks like it landed from another dimension. Frank Gehry’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts — all swooping stainless steel and unexpected angles — sits on the banks of the Hudson River in Annandale-on-Hudson, and every summer it becomes the home of one of the most ambitious performing arts festivals in the Northeast.

Bard SummerScape, launched in 2003 alongside the Fisher Center’s opening, is not a music festival in the conventional sense. It is a multi-disciplinary season that encompasses opera, orchestral concerts, dance, theater, cabaret, film, and the annual Bard Music Festival — a deep-dive exploration of a single composer that has become one of the most intellectually rigorous events on the classical music calendar. The 2026 season runs June 25 through August 16, and it is characteristically fearless.

The 2026 Season

The centerpiece is a world premiere: Suddenly Last Summer, a new opera with music by Courtney Bryan, libretto by Gideon Lester and Daniel Fish, based on Tennessee Williams’s play. Directed by Daniel Fish — whose radical Broadway reimagining of Oklahoma! earned a Tony — the production runs June 25 through July 19 as a Fisher Center LAB commission. A world premiere opera based on Tennessee Williams, directed by one of the most daring stage directors working today, in a Gehry-designed theater on the Hudson: that is SummerScape in a sentence.

Richard Strauss’s Die ägyptische Helena (The Egyptian Helen) arrives as the SummerScape Opera production, running July 24 through August 2. The season also features Lucinda Childs Dance Company performing new and iconic works June 26 through 28, and the Spiegeltent — a traveling Belgian tent on the Bard campus — hosting cabaret, music, and comedy throughout the summer, curated by Jason Collins.

Mozart and His World

The thirty-sixth annual Bard Music Festival takes on Mozart for 2026, placing the composer’s work in dialogue with his contemporaries and the cultural forces that shaped Vienna in the late eighteenth century. The BMF format — weekend-long programs of concerts, panels, and lectures that surround a single composer with context — has no real equivalent in American classical music. It treats composers not as monuments but as people embedded in specific times and places, and the result is a festival experience that changes how you hear the music long after you leave.

The Fisher Center

Gehry’s building is both the festival’s home and its statement of intent. The architecture announces that what happens inside will not be conventional, and SummerScape consistently delivers on that promise. A new Maya Lin-designed studio building is nearing completion on campus in 2026, adding to an arts infrastructure that rivals institutions ten times Bard’s size.

The Hudson Valley setting adds its own dimension. Between performances, you are on a college campus overlooking the river, surrounded by the Catskills to the west and the gentle hills of Dutchess County in every other direction. It is a landscape that makes intermission feel like its own act.

Why It Matters

SummerScape programs the kind of work that most institutions consider too risky: world premiere operas, rarely performed Strauss, contemporary dance, and a composer festival that assumes its audience wants to think as well as listen. It does this in a building that is itself a work of art, on a campus that treats the performing arts not as entertainment but as a core function of education and civic life. The ticket prices are accessible. The ambition is not modest. That combination is rarer than it should be.
