About This Festival

Every spring, the city of Ithaca does what it has been doing for nearly half a century: it shuts down part of its downtown, sets up stages on The Commons and in the surrounding parks, and invites everyone to show up for four days of music, art, food, and the kind of communal celebration that college towns do better than anywhere else.

The Ithaca Festival is free. That fact alone sets it apart from most events on the New York State festival calendar. No wristbands, no tiered tickets, no VIP upgrades — just open access to multiple stages of live music across a long Memorial Day weekend. The programming spans genres with the same democratic spirit: rock bands share the schedule with folk singers, jazz ensembles follow drum circles, and the whole thing moves at the unhurried pace of a community that has been throwing this party long enough to know that the schedule is a suggestion, not a command.

The Commons as a Stage

Ithaca’s pedestrian Commons — the heart of the city’s downtown — provides a natural festival ground that feels purpose-built even though it was not. The brick walkways, the trees, the storefronts that open their doors to the crowd — all of it creates a setting where the line between festival and city life blurs in the best possible way. Stages are positioned throughout the downtown area, close enough to walk between but far enough apart that each one develops its own atmosphere.

Beyond the music, the festival includes arts and crafts vendors, food from local restaurants and food trucks, and a parade that has become one of the event’s signature traditions. The parade is Ithaca in miniature — elaborate, participatory, occasionally bizarre, and entirely sincere. If you have never seen a college town express its collective personality in a single procession, the Ithaca Festival parade is a good place to start.

A Finger Lakes Tradition

The Ithaca Festival is the kind of event that defines a community’s self-image. It is volunteer-organized, free to attend, and programmed with an inclusiveness that reflects Ithaca’s particular blend of academic culture, artistic ambition, and progressive idealism. The music is genuinely varied — this is not a festival that picks a genre and stays there — and the crowd reflects that range, from families with young children to Cornell students to longtime Ithacans who remember when the festival was smaller and the town was quieter.

2026
