About This Festival

NoMad Jazz Festival Returns to Manhattan with a Week of Free Music

The inaugural NoMad Jazz Festival in 2025 did something that veterans of the New York jazz scene thought was no longer possible: it drew an estimated 60,000 to 70,000 people daily to Madison Square Park and surrounding venues, shattering attendance records for the park and establishing itself overnight as a major force on the city’s cultural calendar. One hundred and seventy artists performed across 21 free events at more than 15 venues in the NoMad and Flatiron neighborhoods. The second annual edition runs August 2 through 8, 2026, and there is no reason to expect anything less ambitious.

The Architecture of a Jazz Week

The festival operates in two distinct phases. Pop-up performances at venues throughout the neighborhood run August 2 through 6 — the kind of programming where you might walk into a hotel lobby bar, a restaurant, or a gallery space and find a world-class quartet playing to an audience of forty. These are intimate, serendipitous encounters that reward wandering. Then the mainstage concerts in Madison Square Park anchor August 7 and 8, concentrating the energy into large-scale outdoor performances that are free and open to the public.

The organizing force behind the festival is The NoMad Alliance, the neighborhood’s business improvement organization, which celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2026. That institutional backing matters. This is not a scrappy nonprofit hoping to survive year to year. The Alliance has the relationships, the permits, and the neighborhood buy-in to sustain something at this scale. The decision to keep everything free is a statement about accessibility that the jazz world — often accused of retreating into expensive clubs and subscription concerts — desperately needs.

Why Upstate Jazz Listeners Should Make the Trip

For anyone who has spent evenings at Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, The Egg, or Caffe Lena absorbing the Capital Region’s own formidable jazz programming, the NoMad Jazz Festival represents something qualitatively different. The density of talent across a single week, the variety of venues from park stages to intimate rooms, and the sheer volume of free programming create an experience that cannot be replicated in a single-venue format.

The logistics favor Upstate visitors. A morning train puts you in Penn Station by lunch, and the NoMad neighborhood is a short walk north. The mainstage weekend of August 7 and 8 is the anchor, but arriving a day or two early to catch the pop-ups transforms the trip from a concert outing into a full immersion. Madison Square Park in August, a blanket on the grass, and music that draws from every corner of the tradition — it is one of the finest free offerings anywhere in the country this summer.
