About This Festival

In 2008, The Roots decided they wanted to throw a party. Not a concert — a party. The distinction matters. Questlove and Black Thought, who had spent two decades building the most respected band in hip-hop, envisioned an annual gathering that reflected their own musical DNA: hip-hop at the center, but soul, R&B, funk, jazz, and whatever else felt right woven through the programming like the samples that defined their records. They called it the Roots Picnic, set it in their hometown of Philadelphia, and let the guest list speak for itself.

The 2026 edition runs May 30 and 31 at Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park, and the lineup reads like a statement of purpose. Jay-Z headlines — an artist whose career arc mirrors hip-hop’s own evolution from underground movement to dominant cultural force. Erykah Badu brings the neo-soul gravitas that has made her the most influential voice in R&B for the past quarter century. Brandy and De La Soul round out a bill that spans generations, styles, and the full spectrum of Black musical achievement.

More Than a Festival

The Roots Picnic has always been more than a concert series. The event programs panel discussions, podcast tapings, art installations, and culinary experiences alongside the music, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a cultural summit than a traditional festival. Questlove’s curatorial vision — shaped by his encyclopedic knowledge of music history and his genuine enthusiasm for connecting genres and generations — gives the event a coherence that lineup posters alone cannot convey.

What distinguishes the Roots Picnic from other hip-hop-centric events is the cross-generational programming. A teenager who came for the headliner will encounter legacy acts whose music shaped the genre. A forty-something fan chasing nostalgia will discover new artists through adjacency. The Roots themselves typically close one of the evenings with a performance that draws from their catalog while inviting guests who have appeared throughout the day, turning the finale into a communal moment that justifies the entire event.

Belmont Plateau

The move to Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park gave the Roots Picnic the space it needed to grow. The site — an elevated expanse of green with views of the Philadelphia skyline — provides a natural amphitheater feel without the constraints of an arena or the chaos of a flat field. The park setting keeps the atmosphere relaxed, which is critical for an event that describes itself as a picnic and means it. Blankets, lawn chairs, and the kind of easy movement between stages that larger festivals cannot offer.

The Trip from Upstate

Philadelphia is roughly three and a half hours from Albany via I-87 South and the New Jersey Turnpike, making the Roots Picnic one of the more accessible destination festivals for Upstate New York music fans. The Memorial Day weekend timing helps — it is already a travel weekend, and Philly offers enough food, culture, and nightlife to fill the hours around the festival. The city’s restaurant scene alone is worth the gas money.

For hip-hop and R&B fans in Upstate New York, the Roots Picnic fills a gap that few regional events address. The genre programming in the Northeast skews heavily toward rock, folk, and jam festivals, and the Roots Picnic stands as one of the premier events for fans whose musical home lives at the intersection of hip-hop, soul, and the broader tradition of Black American music.
