About This Festival

Asbury Park has always been a rock and roll town. Bruce Springsteen forged his legend at the Stone Pony. Bon Jovi came up through the same shore bars. The Bouncing Souls and Gaslight Anthem carried the torch through the punk and emo years. When Danny Clinch — the renowned rock photographer whose images have defined album covers and Rolling Stone spreads for decades — launched Sea.Hear.Now in 2018, he was not importing a festival into an unfamiliar market. He was building one in the place where it already belonged.

Sea.Hear.Now takes place directly on the Asbury Park beach and boardwalk, stages set against the Atlantic Ocean, sand under your feet, salt air carrying the sound. The format is two days of rock, indie, and alternative music paired with a professional surf contest and art installations, all woven together by Clinch’s photographer’s eye for atmosphere and curation. It is the rare festival that feels inseparable from its location — you cannot imagine Sea.Hear.Now anywhere else, and once you have been, you understand why.

The Vibe

The festival’s identity sits at the intersection of music, surf culture, and visual art. Clinch’s connections in the photography and music worlds bring acts and collaborations that other festivals cannot replicate. Past editions have featured Pearl Jam, Stevie Nicks, The Killers, Green Day, and My Morning Jacket — arena-level acts playing on a beach to a crowd of roughly 30,000. The surf competition, sanctioned by the World Surf League, runs simultaneously on the waves just offshore, which gives the grounds a dual energy: the roar of the crowd and the rhythm of the ocean, existing side by side.

The boardwalk itself integrates into the festival experience. The Stone Pony, Asbury Lanes, and the town’s other legendary music venues host late-night shows that extend the programming past the beach stages’ curfew. The result is a festival that bleeds into the city — or, more accurately, a city that has been waiting for exactly this kind of event.

From Upstate

Asbury Park is roughly three and a half hours from Albany — south through the Garden State Parkway or the Thruway to the shore. The town has undergone a remarkable revival over the past fifteen years, with new restaurants, galleries, and hotels lining the boardwalk and surrounding streets. A Sea.Hear.Now weekend doubles as a shore trip, and the September timing — after the summer crowds have thinned but before the weather turns — is ideal.

For Upstate rock fans who have grown up on Springsteen records and never visited Asbury Park, Sea.Hear.Now provides the perfect excuse. The music is the draw, but the town tells the story.
