Every two years, Wilco takes over a contemporary art museum in the Berkshires and turns it into a festival. That sentence alone should tell you whether Solid Sound is for you.
MASS MoCA — the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams — is one of the largest contemporary art spaces in the world, a sprawling complex of converted mill buildings that already feels like a festival even when there is no music playing. When Wilco curates a three-day event across its galleries, courtyards, and stages, the result is something that has no real equivalent in the American festival landscape: a music festival with world-class visual art as its backdrop, curated entirely by a single band whose taste extends well beyond their own catalog.
Wilco’s Festival
Solid Sound launched in 2010 and runs biennially — every other summer. The format gives the curation time to breathe. Jeff Tweedy and the band personally select every performer, comedian, and artist on the bill, and the results consistently reflect the breadth of their influences rather than the algorithms of festival booking agents.
The 2026 edition runs June 26 through 28 with Wilco headlining alongside Jeff Tweedy solo, Billy Bragg, Gang of Four, and the Autumn Defense. But the lineup only tells part of the story. Solid Sound also programs comedy, spoken word, art installations, and activities that take full advantage of MASS MoCA’s unique architecture — winding through galleries between sets is as much a part of the experience as the music itself.
Capacity is capped at roughly eight thousand per day, which keeps the festival at a scale where you can actually get close to the stages and move between venues without the logistical friction of larger events. It is, by design, an intimate festival in a world-class space.
Forty-Five Minutes from Albany
North Adams sits just across the Massachusetts border from the Capital Region, a straight shot east on Route 2 through some of the best scenery the Berkshires have to offer. For Upstate New York music fans, Solid Sound is closer than many in-state festivals — an easy day trip or weekend excursion that happens to include one of the most thoughtfully curated events in the Northeast.
The surrounding town has grown alongside MASS MoCA’s reputation, with restaurants, lodging, and a creative community that makes the non-festival hours worthwhile. If you have never visited MASS MoCA outside of Solid Sound, the museum alone justifies the drive.
