40 years in the same midday slot at WCMF Rochester — one of the longest single-station tenures in American rock radio

Dave Kane-O Kane, 40-year WCMF Rochester midday host

For more than four decades, Dave “Kane-O” Kane was the voice of midday rock on Rochester’s WCMF 96.5 FM, one of the most enduring classic rock stations in the Northeast. From his first shift in 1981 to his final daily broadcast in March 2021, Kane held down the same midday slot with a consistency that became the station’s backbone — a feat almost unheard of in an industry defined by constant turnover.

From Brooklyn to the Flower City

A Brooklyn native, Kane studied journalism at SUNY Brockport, where an introductory broadcasting class redirected his career. His first paid radio gig came in Geneva, New York, spinning soft rock on overnight shifts. A brief stint at Magic 92 in Rochester followed before he landed at WCMF in 1981, where he would remain for the rest of his career. He turned down out-of-town offers repeatedly, choosing Rochester — and the family life he built there — over bigger markets.

Defining Rochester’s Rock Identity

Kane’s midday programming became ritual for generations of Rochester workers. His lunch-hour “work force blocks” — themed music sets tailored for the midday crowd — were a signature. “Twofer Tuesdays” doubled down on deep cuts, and his weekly Beatles show showcased an encyclopedic knowledge that made him the station’s resident authority on the Fab Four. Every Friday, he opened the weekend with “Shanty” by Jonathan Edwards, a tradition listeners came to expect like clockwork.

What set Kane apart from the parade of classic rock jocks across the dial was his genuine connection to listeners. He wasn’t a shock jock or a contest machine. He was the guy you recognized at the grocery store, the voice that made the commute feel familiar. Rochester’s media landscape — with multiple stations operating under one roof — gave him creative collaborators, but the audience loyalty was his alone.

Legacy

Kane’s 40-year anniversary at WCMF in February 2021 was celebrated across Rochester media. When he signed off from daily broadcasting the following month, he left behind a legacy as the longest-tenured personality in WCMF history. He spent two-thirds of his life in Rochester, raising his family and becoming as much a part of the city’s identity as Kodak or the Lilac Festival. In an era when radio personalities chase bigger markets and bigger paychecks, Kane-O stayed put — and Rochester was better for it.
