There are concert concepts and then there are concert concepts. Bit Brigade’s approach to live performance belongs in its own category: a guitarist plays through a classic video game in real time on a projected screen while the full band performs the entire soundtrack beneath it. For their Albany date at The Linda, they are taking on Mega Man X — one of the most beloved action platformer soundtracks ever composed.
The Concept and Why It Works
What makes Bit Brigade more than a novelty act is the level of musicianship required to pull the format off. The band has to track the gameplay in real time and match the score to the on-screen action — the music changes as the stages change, as the boss fights begin, as the final sequences unfold. It is part concert, part speedrun, and entirely its own thing.
The Mega Man X soundtrack is well-suited to this treatment. The original compositions are melodically strong and rhythmically driving — the kind of material that benefits from being played on real instruments at real volume. Fans of the game know every note of every stage theme; hearing those melodies executed by a live band while watching the gameplay happen simultaneously is a different experience than either thing alone.
The audience for a show like this is genuinely mixed — people who grew up on the game and people who came for the live rock performance and people who heard about the concept and needed to see it for themselves. The Linda WAMC’s Performing Arts Studio is a room that handles attentive audiences well. The intimate setting keeps the focus on what is happening on stage and on screen, which is exactly the right environment for a performance that requires you to watch.
