The Linda

About This Venue

Most venues are just venues. The Linda is a venue that doubles as a broadcast studio, which changes everything about how a show feels when you are sitting in the audience. Nearly every performance that takes place at WAMC’s Performing Arts Studio is recorded and mixed for broadcast across a seven-state public radio network. The artist knows it. The sound engineer knows it. And you — in a room that holds just 340 people, close enough to see the condensation on the singer’s water glass — can hear the difference. There is a focus and precision to shows at The Linda that bigger rooms rarely achieve. When the house lights go down on a Wednesday night and the opening notes hit, you understand why this unassuming space on Central Avenue has become one of the Capital Region’s most respected stages.

The Linda is located at 339 Central Avenue, on the corner of Central and Quail Street in Albany’s Midtown neighborhood. It is named after Linda Norris, a longtime supporter and contributor to WAMC Northeast Public Radio, the station that owns and operates the venue. The naming is fitting — this is a space built on the idea that public support creates public art. No corporate naming rights, no logo splashed across the stage. Just a first name and a commitment to bringing world-class music to a mid-sized city that punches well above its weight.

The Programming

The Linda’s booking leans into the genres that public radio audiences love — folk, blues, Americana, jazz, and roots rock — but the calendar is broader than that label suggests. Ska legends The Skatalites have played here. Ronnie Earl and The Broadcasters have brought their blues guitar mastery to the stage. Stephane Wrembel, the Django Reinhardt-inspired guitarist who scored Woody Allen’s films, is a regular. Local acts like Katalyst, a jazz organ trio, share the calendar with national touring artists. The through line is not genre but quality — The Linda books artists who reward close listening, and the room delivers the intimacy to match.

The flagship program is Live at The Linda, which airs Wednesday and Sunday evenings at 8 PM on WAMC. If you have ever tuned in while driving through the Capital Region and thought “that sounds like a great room,” you were right. The broadcast captures the venue’s natural warmth, but being there in person is another level entirely.

Beyond music, The Linda hosts lectures, film screenings, debates, and community events. The monthly “Food for Thought” film series, presented in partnership with the Honest Weight Food Co-op, screens documentaries about food systems, agriculture, and sustainability. It is a reminder that this is a public radio venue — the mission goes beyond entertainment.

The Space

At 340 seats, The Linda is one of the smaller dedicated music venues in the Capital Region, and that is precisely the point. The room is configured as a performing arts studio — not a bar with a stage, not a theater with a pit, but a purpose-built space where the acoustics serve the music and the broadcast simultaneously. Sightlines are clean from every seat. The sound is detailed and balanced, calibrated for recording as much as for live enjoyment. There is no bad seat in the house because there are no seats far enough away to be bad.

The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious. This is not a venue where you fight through a crowd at the bar or shout over the PA between sets. People come to listen. The audience skews toward music enthusiasts who know the artists, know the catalog, and appreciate the chance to hear a performance in a room where every nuance comes through. It is the kind of place where a guitarist can play a quiet passage and hear it land.

Getting There and Parking

The Linda is on Central Avenue, Albany’s long commercial corridor that runs west from downtown toward the suburbs. From I-90 (the New York State Thruway), take Exit 5 (Everett Road). Head toward Albany on Everett Road, turn left onto Central Avenue at the T-intersection, and continue about 10 blocks east. The venue is at the corner of Central and Quail Street — look for the WAMC signage.

Parking is straightforward. On-street metered parking along Central Avenue is free after 5 PM and on weekends. The Albany Parking Authority operates several lots along Central Avenue between Henry Johnson Boulevard and Quail Street, with $5 flat-rate parking after 5 PM on weekdays and all day on weekends. For most evening shows, you will find a spot within a block or two without trouble.

Where to Eat Nearby

Central Avenue and the surrounding blocks have solid pre-show dining options. Savoy Taproom on Lark Street (a short drive south) is a Capital Region favorite for creative cocktails and elevated pub food in a stylish setting. Taiwan Noodle on Central Avenue itself is a reliable choice for authentic Chinese and Taiwanese fare — no frills, great dumplings. Son of Egg, also nearby, serves Korean-inspired comfort food with bold flavors and a casual counter-service vibe that works perfectly when you are on a pre-show timeline.

Know Before You Go

  • Shows often sell out at this capacity. Buy tickets in advance through The Linda’s website rather than counting on walk-up availability.
  • The venue is a studio environment — arrive on time. Late arrivals disrupt both the audience and the broadcast.
  • WAMC members sometimes get early access or discounted tickets. If you are a public radio supporter, check for member benefits before buying.
  • The neighborhood along Central Avenue is undergoing revitalization. It is safe, well-lit, and increasingly lively, but it is not Lark Street — manage your expectations for post-show nightlife within walking distance.
