The Falcon sits on Route 9W in Marlboro — tucked into the Hudson Valley, not far from the river — and if you have never been, that alone should convince you to make the Wednesday night drive. The room holds 150 people, and most nights run donation-driven, which means the barrier to walk in is low and the intimacy is built into the format. On August 19, it is worth the trip.
About John “Papa” Gros
John “Papa” Gros is a New Orleans keyboardist, organist, and vocalist who has spent more than thirty years making the case that the Crescent City’s musical tradition is not history — it is a living thing he carries every time he sits down at the piano or the Hammond B3.
He was mentored by Allen Toussaint, Art Neville, and Dr. John, and it shows in the way he plays. Art Neville’s guidance was characteristically direct: “Play from the gut. Play down low. Don’t play all the high stuff.” The Times-Picayune describes him as “steeped in New Orleans music tradition, standing at the intersection of funk, R&B, soul and Americana music.” Keith Spera of The Advocate calls him “a bedrock New Orleans artist.”
He led Papa Grows Funk for over a decade — a band that held a twelve-year Monday night residency at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans — before building a solo catalog that includes Day’s End (2004), River’s On Fire (2016), Central City (2020), and the just-released Giants (2026). That newest record is his most personal: interpretations of songs by Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, The Meters, Billy Preston, and Levon Helm — the artists who built the tradition he now carries forward.
He puts it plainly: “Sharing New Orleans with the world is my calling.” A Wednesday night at The Falcon is exactly where that calling lands.
