Cohoes Music Hall doesn’t get mentioned in the same breath as the big Capital District rooms, which is exactly why you should pay attention when it books something like this. On Friday, May 15, the historic 350-capacity theater on Remsen Street is hosting Lez Zeppelin for The Song Remains the Same – 50th Anniversary Celebration, and if you are anywhere in the Albany area that night, this is the one worth rearranging your calendar for.
The concept is exactly what it sounds like. Fifty years ago, Led Zeppelin released the concert film shot at their 1973 Madison Square Garden performances. Lez Zeppelin is marking the anniversary by performing the entire soundtrack from first note to last — “No Quarter,” “Dazed and Confused,” “Since I’ve Been Loving You,” “Stairway to Heaven” — paired with a multimedia presentation inspired by the original film. The band’s own words: “This film and soundtrack are sacred ground for Zeppelin fans and musicians alike. To play it from top to bottom — complete with the cinematic scope and improvisational fire of the original — is a challenge we embrace with deep reverence and fierce joy.”
About Lez Zeppelin
Active since 2004, the band was founded by New York-based guitarist Steph Paynes. The all-female quartet — nicknamed the “She-Incarnation” — is the only Led Zeppelin tribute personally endorsed by Jimmy Page. His 2013 endorsement put it plainly: “They played the Led Zeppelin music with an extraordinary sensuality and an energy and passion that highlighted their superb musicianship.” Their debut record was produced by Eddie Kramer, who engineered several of the original Led Zeppelin albums. Chuck Klosterman wrote them up in Spin in 2005 and called them “the most powerful all-female band in rock history.” Festival credits include Download (UK), Rock am Ring, Rock im Park, and the Voodoo Festival in New Orleans.
