On September 29, 1986, Billy Joel kicked off his sprawling 150-show Bridge Tour at, of all places, the Glens Falls Civic Center — a hometown-sized barn in the Adirondack foothills chosen to open a run that would eventually take him across North America, Australia, Japan, and six shows behind the Iron Curtain in the Soviet Union. The Piano Man used the intimate room to debut a stack of new songs from “The Bridge” live for the first time, including the concert premiere of “A Matter of Trust.” Forty years later, Glens Falls holds a strange little piece of rock history: the night one of the world’s biggest tours began in one of Upstate’s smallest arenas.
