On October 10, 1996, the Dave Matthews Band brought its fall tour to Albany’s Knickerbocker Arena, barely five months after Crash had debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and moved the Charlottesville group out of the clubs for good. With Boxing Gandhis opening, the band played a 14-song set that opened on “Tripping Billies,” leaned hard on the new record with “Crash Into Me,” “Too Much,” “So Much to Say” and “Drive In, Drive Out,” and closed on “Ants Marching” before an encore of Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.” That winter, “So Much to Say” would earn the band its first Grammy. Thirty years later, the night stands as a snapshot of the Dave Matthews Band at the exact moment it became an arena act.
