Metallica wasn’t headlining — they were opening for Ozzy Osbourne on the Ultimate Sin Tour. Cliff Burton was still on bass, and Master of Puppets had been released just weeks earlier on March 3rd. Five months later, Burton would be killed in a tour bus accident in Sweden. Rochester got to see what may be thrash metal’s greatest lineup in its rawest form — Metallica opening for Ozzy, in a 4,000-seat arena, with an album that would become one of the most important metal records ever made.
