On October 4, 1986, Neil Young & Crazy Horse brought their Live in a Rusted Out Garage tour into Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, one night after a stop at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens. Young, Frank Sampedro, Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina worked through two long sets that ran from “Mr. Soul” and “Cinnamon Girl” to “Cortez the Killer,” “Powderfinger” and “Like a Hurricane,” closing the second set with “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” before an encore of “Prisoners of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Six of the night’s songs were still unreleased, including “Inca Queen,” “Mideast Vacation” and “Long Walk Home,” and five of them would anchor Young’s 1987 album Life. Forty years later, it stands as a snapshot of Crazy Horse at full roar inside a building Buffalo has since lost.
