The Experience played Troy Armory with Soft Machine opening — a show originally scheduled for April 7 but postponed after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Hendrix was at a career peak: Axis: Bold as Love had just charted at No. 3 that February, and Are You Experienced was already a landmark. The seven-song setlist included “Purple Haze,” “Foxy Lady,” “Red House,” and “Fire.” The Troy Armory was known for its rough acoustics, but Hendrix thrilled the crowd regardless.
