The Rolling Stones at the Rochester Community War Memorial — November 1, 1965

On November 1, 1965, the Rolling Stones brought their second American tour of the year to the Rochester Community War Memorial, the night after a stop at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts were touring behind Out of Our Heads, and roughly 4,000 young fans met them with a surge toward the stage. An unprecedented 120 police officers were on hand, and they shut the show down almost as soon as it started; accounts put it at about seven minutes, or six songs. Afterward, Richards reportedly told police, “This is a hick town. They were twice as wild in Montreal.” It remains one of the shortest, and most talked-about, nights in Rochester concert history.
