Daryl Franklin Hohl was born on October 11, 1946, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, but his Upstate New York connection runs deep. As Daryl Hall — one half of Hall & Oates, the best-selling musical duo in American history — he chose the Hudson Valley hamlet of Pawling, New York, as the home for both his celebrated music venue and his creative life.
Hall & Oates: The Numbers
Hall met John Oates at Temple University in Philadelphia, and they signed their first record contract in 1972. What followed was one of the most commercially dominant runs in pop music history: six No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 — “Rich Girl” (1977), “Kiss on My List” (1981), “Private Eyes” (1981), “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)” (1981), “Maneater” (1982), and “Out of Touch” (1984) — plus over 40 top-40 hits across their career. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2014, and Hall was individually inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.
Daryl’s House: Pawling, NY
In 2014, Hall opened Daryl’s House, a restored live music venue and restaurant in Pawling, New York. The venue serves as the primary filming location for his web series and TV show Live from Daryl’s House, launched in 2007, which features Hall performing live with guest musicians ranging from Smokey Robinson to Chromeo. Earlier episodes were filmed at his home in nearby Millerton, New York. The show returned on Hall’s YouTube channel in November 2023.
Blue-Eyed Soul
Hall’s voice — a supple, technically precise instrument rooted in Philadelphia soul, gospel, and R&B — has been praised by collaborators from Robert Fripp to Todd Rundgren. His solo career spans multiple labels and styles, always anchored by that vocal gift.
Hudson Valley Legacy
By planting Daryl’s House in Pawling, Hall transformed a small Dutchess County village into a destination for music lovers and established the Hudson Valley as a living room for one of pop music’s most successful artists. The best-selling duo in history chose Upstate New York as home.
