Fran Cosmo, Boston vocalist from Utica, New York

Francis Cosmo Migliaccio was born on October 17, 1956, in Utica, New York — a factory town in the Mohawk Valley that would seem an unlikely incubator for one of arena rock’s most powerful voices. But Fran Cosmo, as he became known, possessed a sky-high tenor that would eventually fill stadiums alongside one of the biggest bands in rock history.

Orion the Hunter

Cosmo’s first major break came with Orion the Hunter, a band featuring former Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau and Heart drummer Michael DeRosier. Active from 1983 to 1985, the group released a self-titled album on Columbia Records in 1984. The single “So You Ran,” co-written by Cosmo and Goudreau, reached No. 6 on mainstream AOR radio and earned an MTV video. The band opened for Aerosmith on their 1984 Back in the Saddle tour — a launching pad for what came next.

The Boston Years

In 1992, Cosmo joined Boston as lead vocalist, taking over stage duties from Brad Delp. His first album with the band, Walk On (1994), featured Cosmo as sole lead vocalist and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, earning platinum certification with over a million copies sold. The singles “I Need Your Love” (No. 4 Mainstream Rock) and “Walk On” (No. 7) demonstrated that his voice was more than capable of carrying the Boston legacy. He also contributed lead vocals, guitar, and co-production work to Corporate America (2002), sharing duties with the returning Delp.

A Voice Built for Arenas

Cosmo’s trademark was his ability to handle the punishing high-register passages that defined Boston’s catalog. Where many vocalists strained, Cosmo soared — delivering “More Than a Feeling,” “Rock and Roll Band,” and the new material with equal conviction on tour from 1994 through the mid-2000s.

Legacy

Though health issues eventually led to his departure, Cosmo remains active, performing with his band (featuring son Anton Cosmo) and the World Classic Rockers. A Utica kid who sang his way into one of rock’s most iconic lineups, Fran Cosmo proved that Upstate New York can produce voices big enough for any stage.
