Ra Ra Riot, indie band from Syracuse, New York

Ra Ra Riot emerged from Syracuse University in 2006 as one of the most distinctive indie rock bands of their generation — a group that fused soaring strings, urgent vocals, and infectious melodies into a sound that put Syracuse on the national indie map. Their story is one of creative ambition, devastating loss, and a resilience that carried them from college house parties to international stages.

Born at Syracuse University

The band came together through the classrooms and social circuits of Syracuse University, where guitarist Milo Bonacci connected vocalist Wes Miles, violinist Rebecca Zeller (from an electronic music class), bassist Mathieu Santos, cellist Alexandra Lawn, and drummer John Pike. Their early shows — loud, sweaty affairs in Syracuse basements and house parties — generated immediate buzz for a sound that felt both cerebral and visceral, blending chamber-pop strings with punk energy.

Tragedy and Perseverance

In June 2007, co-founder and drummer John Pike drowned in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, shortly after a show. Pike had written many of the band’s early lyrics, and his death could have ended Ra Ra Riot before they truly began. Instead, the surviving members pressed forward, rotating through drummers including Cameron Wisch and Gabriel Duquette while preserving the spirit Pike had helped create.

Albums and Ascent

Their debut full-length, The Rhumb Line (2008), established them as festival favorites and critical darlings, with its orchestral indie-rock sound drawing comparisons to Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend. The Orchard (2010) and Beta Love (2013) pushed further into electronic territory, while Need Your Light (2016) balanced accessibility with experimentation. The departure of cellist Alexandra Lawn in 2012 shifted the band’s sonic palette, but the core of Miles, Bonacci, Zeller, and Santos held firm.

Upstate Roots, National Reach

Ra Ra Riot’s connection to the broader indie universe runs deep. Wes Miles and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig are childhood friends, and Miles collaborated with Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij on the electronic side project Discovery in 2009. But the band’s identity remains rooted in Syracuse — in the DIY ethos of those early house shows and the university community that launched them.
