Joywave, synth-pop band from Rochester, New York

Joywave is Rochester’s most successful musical export of the 2010s — a synth-rock band that turned the Flower City’s post-industrial grit into a launching pad for a sound that splits the difference between new wave, electropop, and art-rock. Led by vocalist Daniel Armbruster, the band has spent over a decade proving that a world-class act can come from a mid-sized Upstate city and stay loyal to it.

Rochester Roots

The band formed in January 2010, with Armbruster, guitarist Joseph Morinelli, bassist Sean Donnelly, keyboardist Benjamin Bailey, and drummer Paul Brenner all meeting through Rochester’s tight-knit music community. Their early work — mixtapes like 77777 (2011) and the EP Koda Vista — blended satirical wit with electronic production, establishing a sound that was too weird for mainstream pop and too catchy for the indie underground. Bailey, who named the band, helped define its synth-heavy palette from the start.

Breakthrough and Beyond

Joywave’s debut album, How Do You Feel Now? (2015, Hollywood Records), broke them nationally. “Tongues,” a collaboration that landed on Showtime’s Shameless, brought them to mainstream attention. “Destruction” became a rock radio staple, and “Carry Me” showcased the emotional depth beneath the synth gloss. A high-profile feature on Big Data’s hit “Dangerous” — which charted in the top 10 on Billboard’s Alternative chart — cemented their reputation as one of indie rock’s most versatile acts.

Five albums deep, including Permanent Pleasure (2024), Joywave continues to evolve while keeping Rochester at the center of their identity. Armbruster has spoken extensively about how the city’s blue-collar mentality, its DIY ethos, and even his day job at Staples during the early years shaped the band’s sound and work ethic. They’ve recorded in a quirky Rochester cottage, played shows at the Frederick Douglass Building, and released The Rochester Sesquicentennial on vinyl as a tribute to their hometown.

Cultural Export

In a music industry that still gravitates toward Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Nashville, Joywave stands as proof that geography doesn’t determine greatness. They are Rochester’s band — proudly, vocally, and without apology.
