Maria Brink grew up in Schenectady, New York, under circumstances that would have broken most people. Her father abandoned the family when she was young. Her mother struggled with addiction. Brink became a mother herself at 15. But from that crucible of hardship, she forged one of the most powerful voices in modern heavy metal, fronting In This Moment for nearly two decades and becoming one of the genre’s most commanding and theatrical performers. Her trajectory from the Capital Region to metal stardom is a story of pure, unrelenting defiance.
From Schenectady to Los Angeles
Born December 18, 1977, Brink spent her formative years in Schenectady before relocating to Los Angeles in 2002 after finding that local band projects in the Capital Region weren’t offering the opportunities she needed. In LA, she auditioned for guitarist Chris Howorth’s band Dying Star. Howorth initially refused to even hear a female vocalist — he told her the band wasn’t interested. Brink responded by bursting into a rehearsal, grabbing the microphone, and singing with a ferocity that changed his mind on the spot. The band became In This Moment, and Brink became its defining force.
Eight Albums and a Gold Record
In This Moment’s debut, Beautiful Tragedy (2007), introduced Brink’s extraordinary range — from guttural screams to soaring clean vocals — to the metal world. The Dream (2008) and A Star-Crossed Wasteland (2010) expanded their audience through relentless touring, but it was Blood (2012) that transformed the band entirely. The album debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200, and both the title track single and album were a commercial breakthrough — a remarkable achievement in modern metal. The album’s aesthetic — blending metal with industrial textures, chanted vocals, and ritualistic imagery — defined a new creative direction.
Black Widow (2014), Ritual (2017), Mother (2020), and Godmode (2023) continued to push creative boundaries. Each album expanded the band’s sonic palette, incorporating electronic production, orchestral arrangements, and visual storytelling that made In This Moment’s live shows among the most elaborate in heavy music. Brink’s performances — featuring intricate costumes, choreography, and thematic staging — elevated the concert experience into something closer to theater.
Brink has been awarded Rock Goddess of the Year at the Loudwire Music Awards in 2013 and 2015, and In This Moment earned a Grammy nomination in 2021. The girl from Schenectady who refused to be turned away from an audition is now one of metal’s most recognized and respected frontpeople, and the Capital Region can claim her as its own. Her journey from Schenectady to the top of the metal world is one of the most inspiring stories in heavy music — a testament to what sheer force of will and undeniable talent can accomplish against every possible odd.
