Empire Live opened in the fall of 2021 at 93 North Pearl Street — the former Capitol Repertory Theater building — and within two years it had quietly become the most important mid-size concert venue in the Capital Region. The 1,000-capacity main room fills the gap between the 300-seat club shows and the 17,000-seat MVP Arena — a sweet spot where touring bands play to a packed general admission floor with real production, real sound, and the kind of energy that only happens when a room is exactly the right size for the act on stage.
Below the main floor, Empire Underground operates as a separate 350-capacity venue in the basement — a smaller, darker room that books emerging acts, DJs, comedy, and the kinds of shows that thrive in a low-ceiling, high-energy space. Between the two rooms, Empire Live programs something nearly every night of the week.

The Main Room
Empire Live’s main floor is a standing-room general admission space with a capacity of 1,000. The room is wide enough to move around but tight enough to maintain intensity — you are never more than a few rows deep from the stage, and the sightlines from the floor are good throughout. There is an elevated area behind the main floor that offers a slightly raised vantage point for people who want to watch without being in the pit.
The production infrastructure is serious for a room this size. The sound system is built for amplified music — rock, hip-hop, electronic, metal, and punk all translate well. The lighting rig can handle the kind of production that touring acts bring, and the stage is large enough for full bands with room to move. Load-in happens through the back of the building on North Pearl Street, and the backstage area is functional and professional.
The venue is general admission for most shows, which means the experience depends on when you arrive. Doors typically open 60 to 90 minutes before the headliner, and the people at the front of the line end up at the front of the stage. If being close to the action matters, arrive early. If you prefer space and a view, the elevated rear section is the move.
Empire Underground
The basement venue operates on its own calendar, sometimes on the same nights as the main room upstairs. At 350 capacity, Empire Underground is a club in the truest sense — low ceilings, close quarters, and the kind of intimacy where the performer’s sweat might land on your shoes. It books emerging artists, touring support acts doing side shows, EDM nights, comedy, and the experimental bookings that do not fit the main room’s scale.
The sound system downstairs is tailored for the space — punchy and present without being overwhelming. For electronic music and hip-hop, the basement acoustics add a thump that the main room cannot replicate. For acoustic and singer-songwriter shows, the intimacy is the draw. Empire Underground is the room where you see an artist six months before they sell out the main room upstairs.

The Booking
Empire Live’s calendar runs wide. Rock, indie, metal, hip-hop, electronic, punk, country, comedy, and DJ nights all cycle through. The venue has become a key stop on the Northeast club circuit — tours routing between New York City, Boston, and Montreal now have a natural 1,000-cap room in Albany that did not exist before 2021. Acts like to play here because the room fills well, the production is professional, and the crowd shows up.
The venue is operated by Live Nation, which gives it access to the same touring network that feeds the bigger rooms in the region. That connection means Empire Live gets acts that might have skipped Albany entirely a decade ago. The result is a calendar that regularly surprises — national headliners doing intimate shows, festival acts on club tours, and the kind of bookings that make people check the schedule weekly.
Getting There
Empire Live sits on North Pearl Street in the heart of downtown Albany, a block from the Palace Theatre and surrounded by the city’s bar and restaurant district. Street parking is available throughout downtown and is metered until 8 PM — after that, it is free. The Quackenbush Parking Garage on Broadway is a short walk from the venue and the most reliable option for sold-out shows.
The venue is easily accessible from I-787, I-90, and I-87. From the suburbs, the drive is 15 to 20 minutes in most directions. Rideshare pickup and drop-off happen on North Pearl Street directly in front of the venue.
The Albany Scene
North Pearl Street and the surrounding blocks are the center of Albany’s nightlife, which means pre-show and post-show options are plentiful and within walking distance.
The Hollow Bar + Kitchen on North Pearl is the natural pre-show spot — a gastropub with a full menu, craft cocktails, and its own small performance space downstairs. The food is better than it needs to be for a bar, and the proximity to Empire Live makes it the default gathering point. Dove + Deer on Howard Street brings elevated American fare with a seasonal menu and a cocktail program that takes itself seriously — a good option if you want a proper dinner before the show. For something quicker, The City Beer Hall on Howard Street has a deep draft list and bar food in a lively, communal setting that fills up on concert nights.
Insider Tips
- Get there early for floor position. General admission means first come, first served. The difference between arriving at doors and arriving 30 minutes later is significant — especially for sold-out shows.
- Check both rooms. Empire Live and Empire Underground sometimes run shows on the same night. Check both calendars — the basement show might be the one you do not want to miss.
- The elevated section is underrated. If you do not need to be in the pit, the raised area behind the main floor offers good sightlines, more space, and easier bar access.
- Street parking is free after 8 PM. For most shows, you can park on the street for nothing. Arrive a few minutes before 8 and save the garage fee.
- Empire Underground for discovery. If you want to see the next wave of artists before they blow up, the basement room is where that happens in Albany. Tickets are usually under $20.
