The Song Remains the Same — the Led Zeppelin concert film capturing the band’s 1973 concerts at Madison Square Garden, released to theaters in 1976 — turns 50 this year. Lez Zeppelin has built a touring production around that anniversary, performing the complete MSG soundtrack accompanied by a multimedia presentation, and the Cohoes Music Hall date on May 15 is among the more interesting bookings on the Northeast run: a seated historic theater in a small city just north of Albany, about as far from Madison Square Garden in character as you can get while still being in New York State.
About Lez Zeppelin
Formed in New York City in 2004 by guitarist Steph Paynes, Lez Zeppelin has spent two decades building a reputation that extends well beyond the tribute-act designation. The all-female quartet describes their approach not as imitation but as “a she-incarnation” — the argument being that great material played with superb musicianship generates something of its own rather than simply recreating what already exists. That argument has support at the highest possible level: Jimmy Page attended one of their London performances and offered an endorsement the band has, understandably, been citing ever since. “They played the Led Zeppelin music with an extraordinary sensuality and an energy and passion that highlighted their superb musicianship.” Page has not said the same about any other act.
The press has generally agreed. Chuck Klosterman wrote in Spin that they are “the most powerful all-female band in rock history.” The Times (UK) called them “the best new band I’ve seen all year, no question.” These are not minor endorsements, and the band has done enough worldwide touring since 2004 to have earned them repeatedly.
For this production, the setlist draws from those 1973 MSG concerts — No Quarter, Dazed and Confused, Since I’ve Been Loving You, Stairway to Heaven — framed by visuals inspired by the original film. It is a complete-album-style presentation, not a greatest-hits set, which is either exactly what you want or a reason to look something up before you go.
