Southern Culture on the Skids is one of the most genuinely fun live bands still on the road — and on Thursday, May 21, they bring their Southern-fried, chicken-tossing road show to Rec Room in Buffalo. This one is worth the trip.
About Southern Culture on the Skids
Active since 1983 and hailing from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Southern Culture on the Skids has spent four-plus decades building one of the most devoted live followings in American roots music. Founder Rick Miller (guitar/vocals) anchors a tight four-piece with Mary Huff on bass and vocals, Dave Hartman on drums, and Chris “Cousin Crispy” Bess on keyboards and whatever else the song calls for.
Their sound pulls from rockabilly, country, blues, swamp pop, and chitlin circuit R&B, with surf guitar running through it and a punk attitude keeping things from getting too reverent. The live experience consistently earns a few reliable descriptors: raucous, sleazy, and a genuinely great time.
The live show is the reason people make the drive. Expect fried chicken in the crowd — a real SCOTS tradition, not a bit, and a full audience-participation ritual built around fan favorite “Eight Piece Box.” Opening the evening is The Get Down.
