Most tribute acts ask their audience to remember. Abbey Road asks them to listen. The group’s “Christmas with the Beatles” holiday production, landing at Utica’s Stanley Theatre on Wednesday, Dec. 9, is built on a standard of replication that goes beyond surface-level impersonation: tight harmonies, Liverpudlian dialect sustained through the on-stage banter, and three costume changes tracing the Fab Four from the early matching Beatle suits through Sgt. Pepper’s regalia and into the Abbey Road era. It is not a nostalgic haze. It is a specific argument about what those songs sounded like.
About the Show
Abbey Road’s set combines the Beatles’ biggest songs with holiday material: seasonal classics woven into a catalog survey that moves through the band’s eras in roughly chronological order. The group reproduces all four members’ voices, personalities, and the familiar between-song patter the original four turned into its own kind of performance. What distinguishes the act over the long haul is the cumulative detail: custom-tailored costumes, vintage instruments, and the Liverpudlian character that holds across the full runtime. Over a career spanning 30-plus years and more than 2,000 concerts on four continents, Abbey Road has appeared on NBC, CBS, and ABC; Pete Best, Cynthia Lennon, Louise Harrison, and Mike McCartney have all attended shows over the years — people who would hear it immediately if the harmonies were off. The L.A. Times offered two words: “The show delivers!” The O.C. Register called it “Smart and loads of fun.” The show begins at 7:00 p.m.
Venue & Logistics
The Stanley Theatre, at 259 Genesee Street in Utica, opened September 10, 1928 as a movie palace designed by Thomas Lamb, the Scottish-born architect whose portfolio included the Fox Theatre in San Francisco and the Capitol Theatre in New York, both since demolished. The Stanley is one of three surviving Lamb-designed theaters in Upstate New York, alongside Proctors Theatre in Schenectady and the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, a survivor from a period of American theater construction that mostly didn’t survive. At 2,963 seats, it’s a hall that predates Beatlemania by more than three decades and has since hosted REO Speedwagon, Tony Bennett, and Jerry Seinfeld. The central New York region doesn’t have many rooms like it.
