Cornfield has been creating music since 2008, accumulating five previous full-lengths and a critical standing that sits at an odd intersection: press describes her as “standing among the great singer-songwriters of her generation” while simultaneously calling her “Canada’s best-kept secret.” Both characterizations are apparently accurate. On December 4, she co-headlines Rec Room in Buffalo with Philadelphia’s Friendship, with More Eaze opening.

Friendship, also on Merge Records, released Caveman Wakes Up in May 2025. The Philadelphia band — Dan Wriggins, Michael Cormier-O’Leary, Peter Gill, and Jon Samuels — works in what critics have described as ambling, conversational indie rock colored by pedal steel and Rhodes piano. Their 2022 Merge album Love the Stranger put them on the national indie circuit; Caveman Wakes Up extended that reach. The pairing with Cornfield makes sense: two Merge acts with adjacent sensibilities and enough difference in execution to give the bill some range. More Eaze, listed as an alternative act, opens.
Hurts Like Hell is Cornfield’s first album since she became a mother in 2023. Press coverage describes the record as exploring “life’s firsts and lasts, informed by the metamorphosis of motherhood,” and marks it as Cornfield’s first consistent departure from writing exclusively within her own immediate perspective. Produced by Philip Weinrobe — whose recent credits include Adrianne Lenker and Hand Habits — and recorded live off the floor at Sugar Mountain studio in Brooklyn in January 2025, the album features contributions from Feist, El Kempner of Palehound, Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive, Buck Meek, Christian Lee Hutson, and Maia Friedman. Cornfield played her 1967 Gibson J-50 throughout, leaning on rhythm-chord work rather than ornamentation — an approach that tends to read clearly in a live room.
