Horror punk as a genre doesn’t reward patience. The whole aesthetic runs on urgency, on records that feel like they might collapse under their own momentum before the last chord rings out. Which makes Blitzkid’s 16-year absence from the full-length format a peculiar position for a horror punk act to hold. Modern Hel is their return to it, and the Modern Hel Tour brings that record to Rec Room in Buffalo on Tuesday, December 15.
About the Show
Blitzkid has been active since 1997, long enough to outlast most of their genre contemporaries and earn festival billing at Wave Gotik Treffen and Wacken Open Air, a circuit that has no patience for acts that can’t deliver live. A band with those credentials playing a 300-cap room on a Tuesday in December is worth examining: this is either a deliberate choice to reconnect at the club level, or the realistic scale of where a 16-year recording gap lands you. Either way, it’s the right room for what they do.
Modern Hel arrives carrying the weight of that absence. The band describes the new material as pushing into more aggressive territory — a blistering fusion of thrash and hardcore layered onto their signature haunting melodies and anthemic choruses. By their own framing, the classic elements remain central; the new ones add force without dismantling what worked. Sixteen years is long enough for a fanbase to scatter and have to be reconvinced. Modern Hel is making that case.
VIP packages are available at all tour dates and include early entry, exclusive merchandise, and a pre-show acoustic performance. That acoustic element is an unusual offering for a band operating in this corner of punk, and it’s the kind of access that works best in a room this size — up close, before the crowd arrives. Support acts are listed as special guests; no names had been confirmed at the time of publication.
