Carpenter’s Legacy has spent years getting two things right: Karen Carpenter’s voice, pitched to carry without pushing, and Richard Carpenter’s arrangements, trimmed to exactly what each song needed. The production brings A Christmas Portrait to Cohoes Music Hall on Thursday, December 3, at 7:00 p.m. — Sally Olson as Karen, Ned Mills as Richard, recreating the duo’s beloved 1970s Christmas television specials: costumes, staging, arrangements, and all.
About the Show
This production does not cut corners. Based in Las Vegas with a residency at the V Theater at Planet Hollywood, Carpenter’s Legacy has earned seven Best of Las Vegas wins and two TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards. It was chosen as the featured entertainment for the Carpenters’ 50th and 55th Anniversary Celebrations. In September 2025, Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley proclaimed September 5 Carpenters Legacy Day, an unusual honor for a tribute act that reflects how seriously the production takes its source material. In 2024, Olson and Mills met Richard Carpenter himself; a photo from that meeting appears on the production’s official site.
The Christmas show pulls in holiday favorites — “Merry Christmas, Darling,” “Sleigh Ride,” and “The Christmas Song” — woven through the duo’s greatest hits. The set preserves two signature moments: Karen’s drum solo and Richard’s classical piano showcase, the latter culminating in an “Oh, Holy Night” feature. Michael Lansing, who served as the Carpenters’ audio engineer and Karen’s personal assistant, offered a one-line verdict: “It’s Karen all over again.” The Las Vegas Review-Journal called the production “musically sound, vocally spot-on, and will please any fans of the duo.”
The Cohoes date closes out a tight Northeast swing. The production plays Syracuse and Rochester in late November, then moves to Old Saybrook, Connecticut and Plymouth, Massachusetts, before wrapping the leg here on December 3.
