John Splithoff made his 2025 album Far From Here the way a songwriter makes something honest: in hotel rooms between tour dates, in his own home, in the spaces between movement. Each track is anchored to a place — nine years in New York City, a visit to Glacier National Park, a snowfall in Kyoto — and the music moves accordingly, warm and unhurried, as he brings it to Colony Woodstock on Friday, November 6.
About the Show
Splithoff grew up in suburban Chicago, teaching himself guitar and piano through the records of the 1960s and ’70s — Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Earth Wind & Fire, Fleetwood Mac. He went on to earn a jazz performance degree from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, training that surfaces in his arrangements, in a voice that settles against minimal backing rather than competes with it. He began his New York City career writing from a Harlem apartment, and his 2016 single “Sing to You,” described at the time as “a hypnotic howl, breezy guitar, and an unbreakable bounce,” accumulated over 150 million streams and topped Adult Contemporary radio charts. His sound has drawn comparisons to Michael McDonald, Sade, and Boz Scaggs: retro in its warmth, contemporary in its construction.
Far From Here, released via Virgin Records in March 2025, draws from classic soul, pop, jazz, and R&B, the arrangements leaning into voice over minimal instrumentation, piano and guitar carrying most of the weight. Splithoff described the project as “like looking through an old photo album — reminding me of who I was, who I am, and gives me some inspiration for who I hope to be going forward.” Standout tracks include “City Days,” a reflection on nearly a decade in New York featuring trumpeter Chris Botti, and “Kyoto Snow,” a 1970s-influenced piece written after a trip to Japan with his wife that he described as the first time in a long time he had felt at peace. Venue & Logistics
Colony Woodstock has occupied Rock City Road in Woodstock since 1929, when New York City hotelier Morris Newgold built the mission-style structure as a hotel and concert hall. Local residents Alexia and Neil Howard restored and revived it in 2015, and it has been a fixture of the Hudson Valley‘s live music circuit since. Doors open at 6 p.m.; the show runs 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
