Here is what makes this one worth the drive to Niagara Falls: The Highwaymen Live is running two nights at Bear’s Den Showroom — October 23 and 24 — and tickets start at $38. If you have been looking for an excuse to make a weekend of it in Western New York, this is a pretty good one.

The show is a 90-minute tribute to Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson — three of the four original Highwaymen, performed by a trio of tribute artists who have been doing this at a serious level for years. Mark Gagnon brings Johnny Cash’s voice and presence; he has logged more than 750 performances as Cash in the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet in Branson, Missouri, which is about as credible a resume as a Cash tribute artist can carry. August Manley has been performing as Waylon Jennings since 2005 — the Las Vegas Review Journal called the overall production simply excellent. Michael Moore rounds out the cast as Willie Nelson, handling Nelson’s signature guitar parts live throughout the set.

The production backs all three performers with a 4-piece live band and a full audio-visual presentation. This is not a lounge act — it is a full touring production that has been on the road since 2009, and it comes in at a tight, well-paced 90 minutes.

Bear’s Den Showroom at Seneca Niagara is one of the better mid-size casino rooms in Buffalo / Western NY — good sightlines, easy access to casino parking, and the full resort to lean on if you want to make a proper night of it. Niagara Falls in late October runs quieter than summer, which means no tourist traffic headaches on the drive in and out.
