Sixty years after The Rascals first started making the kind of blue-eyed soul that complicated radio categories and kept the dance floors moving, the 60th Anniversary Tour arrives at Paramount Hudson Valley in Peekskill on Friday, October 16. A 1,024-seat theater is not where most people picture a band of this vintage playing — but it is exactly the right size for music this dependent on human scale. Play this catalog in a cavern and you lose the harmonics; play it in a room this size and you can actually hear what the 1960s fuss was about. The question is whether the live performance still justifies the premise.
About the Show
The 60th Anniversary Tour takes the band’s catalog back on the road, and for The Rascals, that means music that placed them at the center of American rock and soul during their commercial peak in the 1960s. The group built its reputation on vocal harmonies that arrived with genuine urgency and a rhythmic sensibility that owed as much to R&B as it did to the era’s broader rock currents, a combination that gave them a sound that aged better than much of their contemporaries’ work. The harmonies don’t require nostalgia to land; the rhythms didn’t calcify the way guitar-forward rock of the same era often did. Six decades later, the anniversary framing gives the set a purpose beyond inventory-taking. This is a band accounting for its own history in a room small enough to feel it. Showtime is 8:00 p.m.
