JAZZ at Caffe Lena : Chuck Lamb Trio with Special Guest Peter Bernstein at Caffe Lena | October 13, 2026

By David Chen-Watkins · September 12, 2026

Jim Hall once said of Peter Bernstein that he “plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste.” Coming from a legendary guitarist who was also Bernstein’s teacher, that’s not promotion — it’s a description of a playing style built on clarity and conversation rather than flash. Bernstein brings both to Caffe Lena on Tuesday, October 13, as the special guest of Chuck Lamb’s monthly jazz series.

About the Show

Lamb’s Jazz at Caffe Lena residency has made the Phila Street listening room one of the Capital Region‘s more reliably compelling jazz destinations. The pianist brings formidable credentials: he has been a member of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet since 2002, and Dave Brubeck himself called Lamb “an extremely creative, harmonically interesting, rhythmically exciting pianist and one of the best improvisers I’ve heard in recent times.” Earlier this year, Lamb released After Hours on Phila Street, six original jazz-fusion compositions whose title honors the venue’s own address; his August album release show at Caffe Lena sold out in-person.

Bernstein’s résumé is its own argument for October 13. The New York City-born guitarist has appeared on more than 300 recordings and released 14 albums under his own name, working alongside Sonny Rollins, Diana Krall, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, and George Coleman, among others. Critics describe his playing as built on “clear melodic lines,” a “warm tone,” and “effortless swing” — a combination that reads with particular clarity in a listening room rather than on a festival stage. Downbeat Magazine has listed him in its readers’ and critics’ polls for three consecutive years; his Criss Cross Jazz album Heart’s Content features Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, and Bill Stewart. The organizers describe the evening as “fearless improvisation, deep musical conversation, and the kind of spontaneous musical interplay that defines live jazz.” Set Lamb’s harmonic range against Bernstein’s melodic precision and that framing earns its keep.
