The U.S. Army Concert Band has spent eight decades building the case that a single ensemble can hold parade marches and orchestral masterworks, jazz standards and operatic arias, in the same evening — and mean all of them. The ensemble brings that argument to the western New York region when it performs at the Buffalo State Performing Arts Center on Friday, October 30 at 7 p.m.
About the Show
The Concert Band and Soldiers’ Chorus form the oldest and largest performing components of the U.S. Army Field Band, and together they cover a breadth of programming that most civilian ensembles are built to avoid. The Concert Band was established in 1946; the Soldiers’ Chorus followed in 1957. Together, 60 instrumentalists and 29 vocalists carry programs that move from orchestral masterworks to Broadway arrangements to jazz classics to Sousa marches in a single evening — the kind of range that requires musicians trained across genuinely different idioms, not just fluent in one. Performances incorporate high-definition multimedia elements alongside the live music.
Recent touring has brought the ensemble alongside the Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and National Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, the band was featured on Soundtrack of the American Soldier, a recording that earned a Grammy Award. The fall 2026 tour spans multiple states: confirmed nearby dates include Johnstown, Pennsylvania on October 26 and Morristown, New Jersey on November 11, with the Buffalo date in between.
Based at Fort Meade, Maryland, the band serves as the U.S. Army’s official touring musical representative — a role that extends to Presidential Inaugural Parades, state funerals, and diplomatic missions abroad. That ceremonial presence sits alongside eight decades of performing in all 50 states and across 30 foreign countries, with cumulative audiences the organization describes as numbering in the hundreds of millions.
