There is a specific quality to Robert Cray’s live performances that no amount of production can replicate: every note counts, and every song arrives as though it might be the last chance to play it. Across five decades and 19 studio albums, that commitment has kept him at the center of American blues long after lesser careers might have settled into nostalgia. The Robert Cray Band brings the All Amped Up Tour 2026 to Buffalo State Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, November 3, 2026 — twelve days before the 40th anniversary of Strong Persuader.
About the Show
That 1986 album was Cray’s Mercury Records debut, and the record that established him as, in one venue’s own words, “the first blues/soul musician to break through in the MTV era.” A Georgia-born guitarist and singer who grew up partly in Germany on his military father’s jazz and blues records, Cray moved to Tacoma, Washington — finding his way first through The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, then committing fully to the blues, drawing on Albert Collins and B.B. King, before spending years building a following on the Hightone label. Strong Persuader peaked at No. 13 on the mainstream U.S. charts, went double platinum, and eventually earned the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Recording. The New York Times wrote that the album achieved “the spirit of the blues.” In the decades since, Cray has built a career total of five Grammy Awards alongside a Blues Hall of Fame induction, an Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award, and collaborations with B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tina Turner, John Lee Hooker, and The Rolling Stones. His own accounting of it stays close to the ground: “All these years we have been fortunate to do what we love doing, playing the music we love playing.” The All Amped Up Tour 2026 is his current entry in that record.
