JoyRide brings together a former Cirque du Soleil acrobat who performed at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics Opening Ceremonies and the music director who has produced and arranged recordings for Celine Dion, Sting, and Eric Clapton — and somehow the result is a genre-roaming hour that the New York Music Daily called “ridiculous, virtuosic, outside-the-box fun.” The duo plays a Monday matinee at the Brockville Arts Centre on November 2.
About the Show
JoyRide is Colin Maier and Mark Camilleri. Maier, a longtime member of Quartetto Gelato, performs on oboe, musical saw, pennywhistle, and vocals. His background runs well beyond classical training: years with Cirque du Soleil’s KA, credits in Netflix and Disney productions, and his musical saw work on the “Cuphead 2” video game soundtrack. Camilleri is music director for The Tenors, owns Imagine Sound Studios, and has produced and arranged recordings for artists including Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Sting, and Eric Clapton.
The duo formed in 2018 and has toured across Canada and the United States. Their set pulls from jazz, funk, ragtime, Celtic, klezmer, Latin, and bebop. “Jazz crossover” is how they describe it, but that label barely covers the range. Their debut album “JoyRide the CD” has received international jazz radio airplay. The Eden Mills Community Club put the live experience plainly: “The audience was enthralled and dizzy with these supermen of music!”
The show is built around audience engagement. It includes a segment called “Stump the Chump” alongside Camilleri’s signature moment of composing new music on the spot from notes suggested by the crowd. The set also features audience sing-alongs and an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary pieces. The humor is real, and so is the musicianship. This is the kind of show where no two performances are quite the same.
Venue & Logistics
The Brockville Arts Centre — a north-country venue at 235 King Street West in Brockville, Ontario — hosts the performance. The show is presented by the Brockville Concert Association, which is marking its 75th anniversary with a season of diverse programming spanning classical, jazz, and world music. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. for the 1:00 p.m. show, which runs approximately one hour. This is an all-ages event; no outside food or drink is permitted.
